Abstract

A social history of the village from the earliest days of civilisation until recent years. From 1616 much of the village and parish was owned by the Cartwright family, lords of the manor. The estate and family archives have provided material for a vivid picture of how the ordinary people of the village lived and ran their affairs. This is an absorbing account of a village, typical of many, but unusual for the quantity and variety of its archive sources.
