Abstract
This work is concerned primarily with the lesser domestic architecture of the Oxfordshire region, the homes of the yeoman farmers in which traditional and regional features are most clearly expressed, producing a distinctive regional style of building of remarkable homogeneity in material and character. It assesses the history of regional development in terms of architectural character, planning and structure, from medieval times to the end of the 18th century, and examines the progressive rise of dwellings of different social status. This study, carried out between 1952 and 1961, records over 1100 pre-1840 buildings in the villages around Banbury.
