Abstract
This is a unique collection of around two hundred paintings, drawings and engravings of Banbury, mainly as it was in the 18th and 19th century. Accompanying the illustrations are notes on what can be discovered in them and, more important, comment by contemporaries of the scenes they show. In particular George Herbert recalls the Banbury of his youth in the 1830s, with often scurrilous tales of who lived in each house on view. It also includes many paintings by Maurice Draper. A series of paintings of the canal reminds us of its commercial importance, now replaced by leisure activity.
