Abstract
Early Victorian England differs from modern England nowhere more markedly than in the scale of its public drunkenness and violence. The gradual disappearance of the national 'drink problem' is one of the most important and neglected themes in modern British social history. An attempt is made here to investigate temperance activity in one community during the years when the temperance movement was rising to national prominence - that is, in Banbury between 1830 and 1860. In evaluating the movement's achievements we also study the local origins of late Victorian Liberalism, the changing patterns of class alignment, the social function of religious organisations and the transformation of popular recreation.
