Abstract
Banbury is noted for its Cross, its cakes and its ale. These three items played their role in Victorian Banbury but must cede first place to the development of agricultural machinery at the Britannia Works, under the guiding hand of Sir Bernhard Samuelson. In the course of the Victorian era Banbury gradually changed from a small market town, with its prosperity based on that of the surrounding area, to an industrial town with worldwide markets for some of its goods. The population increased from 7,241 in 1841 to 12,968 in 1901 - this increase had a profound effect on the town.
