Abstract
This book describes how English secondary schools have changed in the forty years following the passing of the 1944 Education Act, which abolished fees in state schools and introduced universal secondary education. He sets his account against a background of wider social and political developments and relates it to the lives of his own family and friends, as well as to his own experience as a teacher and educationalist.

Harry Judge was responsible for managing the growth of secondary education in Banbury in the 1960s. He was head of the old Banbury grammar school, so there are many mentions of Banbury in the book.
