Abstract
This work is dedicated to the aesthetic appeal of the Oxford buildings, giving due recognition to the craftsmanship and choice of materials involved, especially the Cotswold stone. This is essentially a geological enquiry into the end product - the buildings themselves. The author gives a detailed description of the geological environment, quarrying and function of the materials used in the early buildings, through the use of local stone, to the necessitated use in the early 19th century of stones from other districts. It contains many geological maps, plans of mentioned quarries and plates of the buildings described.
