Abstract
Our knowledge of the role of 'country gentry' in late medieval England has steadily expanded since the 1930s. Generally the greatest difficulty is with the relative paucity of source material. Lay acrtularies are relatively few in number compared with the products of religious houses. For this reason alone the Langley record is of considerable importance. It provides the basis for a study in some depth of the fortunes and concerns of a reasonably well-endowed family, which helds lands in Warwickshire, Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire.
