Abstract

John Poyntz Spencer, fifth Earl Spencer (1835-1910) was a leading Liberal politician whose career spanned almost forty years. Apart from politics, Spence devoted hiself to the estates surrounding the family seat at Althorp and to play a full part in Northamptonshire affairs. Many aspects of these activities are illuminated in these volumes through the correspondence with his brother Robert. Extensive use has also been made of the family papers, as well as over a hundred collections of private papers. This is the first full-scale study which has been made of the 5th Earl Spencer and fills an important gap in the history of Liberal politics.
