Abstract

The Bartons - Steeple Barton, Westcote Barton and Middle Barton - are in North Oxfordshire, half way between Oxford and Banbury. A busy road, the B4030, bisects them, and the motorist driving along this road may gain an impression only of a long straggling street. But a short distance from the road are narrow country lanes, a brook with two fords, and signs of habitation going back to the humps and bumps of early settlements. It is the people here, the village families, who have played a large part in shaping the history of The Bartons. Many of the families have descendants still living here today, and they have helped build up this picture of the self-supporting community that still existed in the first part of the 20th century.
