Abstract

This volume is concerned, not with the visitation itself, but with a enquiry made by a bishop in advance of his visitation. In the diocese of Oxford this method of enquiry was adopted by Bishop Secker for his visitation in 1738, and the practice was retained thereafter. The queries for the visitation of 1854 are the first we have for the episcopate of Bishop Wilberforce. The returns are of value for both the social and the ecclesiastical historian.
