Abstract
This book describes the many turnpiked roads leading to or through Banbury, usually as part of much longer routes. In addition to Oxfordshire, the roads ran through the neighbouring counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Gloucestershire and Buckinghamshire. Chapters cover each county in turn. Others describe the turnpike system, how the trusts were run, and the traffic through Banbury. There are indexes to personal and place names. These are enhanced by a very lengthy list of Turnpike Trustees named in the numerous Acts of Parliament setting up or altering the trusts discussed.
The book provides an absorbing account of how the roads we now use every day developed and routes might change and towns be affected by distant improvements.
