Abstract
This account book of the Overseers of the Poor is the only major Banbury pre-19th century manuscript remaining, until now, to be published by the Banbury Historical Society. For the early 1720s in particular the efforts of the Vestry to help and sustain the poorest of Banbury's people are listed in great detail, unusual for this generally invisible group of the population. The rest of the volume is mainly devoted to administrative matters, such as the government of the workhouse. Overseers name the many people whose work in raising and distributing the rates provided the borough's poor with a living.

The background is given to the two major events of the century: building the Coventry to Oxford canal as far as Banbury, 1768 to 1778, with lists of local shareholders; and the disputed 1790 demolition of Banbury's medieval church.
