The Reverend Stephen Spencer Pearce was one of the great historians of Combe. During his 30 years as the Vicar of St. Laurence Church, he uncovered the wall paintings and made many improvements to the church. His copious notes about the history of the village provide a mine of information for other historians and give the content of many documents which were lost when the tower caught fire in 1918.
