Abstract
The Witney & East Gloucestershire section of the Great Western Railway was a long, rather sleepy, single track railway, running through the gentle landscape of the Upper Thames Valley from Yarnton in Oxfordshire to Fairford in Gloucestershire. It was planned and built by two separate companies, the Witney Railway, and the East Gloucestershire Railway. Together, the two railways became a 21 mile long Great Western branch line, and were worked as one railway until tje EGR was closed in 1962. The Witney Railway sur vived until 1970 as a reighht-only branch. Today, both railways are derelict. This publication describes the construction, operation, route, stations and demise of the two railways.
