Abstract
This book has come to be regarded as a classic. Many of the recent advances in local history have stemmed directly from ideas Professor Hoskins has put forward, and in most cases later publications have either proved him right or only slightly modified his interpretations of specific sites and places. They have done nothing to alter his basic philosophy of fieldwork and its importance to good local history.
