Abstract
The century and a half covered by this volume was the first period when the townspeople of Banbury were self-governing, following the Charter of Incorporation in 1554. It included some of the most significant events ever to take place in the Borough and was certainly the most turbulent of Banbury's recorded history.
The records of the Corporation, as published in this volume, throw considerable light on the conduct of government in the town. The start of the parish registers in 1558 and the survival in some abundance of wills and inventories make it possible to learn much more about the peope whose names appear in these official records.
