Abstract
An interim report on the work of the M40 Research Group between November 1970 and September 1972. The group found that any given stretch of motorway will, on average, damage or destroy one archaeological site every half a mile. Before the M40 Group started, the area of eastern Oxfordshire to be crossed by the motorway was thought to be archaeologically barren. We now know that people have lived and worked in this area for at least 3000 years and that considerable traces of their activities have been left behind.
This report describes how the Group set about its work in the identification, recording and excavation of archaeological sites.
